Week Ten. The Betway Premier League arrives in the City of Steel. Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield keeps its place as the tenth stop on the tour and with just eight players remaining, the pressure to make it into the final four increases ten-fold. Expect the atmosphere to do the same.
Kim Huybrechts, who missed three agonising match darts, and Peter Wright, who was defeated in a ‘winner stays in’ battle with Adrian Lewis, couldn’t make the cut in a thrilling Judgement Night. Their elimination gave The Jackpot and reigning champion, Raymond van Barneveld, another bite at the apple.
We’ll also see players some play twice from hereon in, with Dave Chisnall and James Wade doing the honours this week. Can either get the second half of their tournament off to a blistering start with maximum points?
Betway Premier League Rewind: Last year in Sheffield…
The story of the night 12 months ago was Raymond van Barneveld’s double triumph over Dave Chisnall and Peter Wright. The Dutchman showed the type of form that won him five World Championships, winning both games 7-5, an early glimpse of the performances that would eventually earn him his first Premier League title.
It was a night that ended on a sour note for flamboyant Scot, ‘Snakebite’ Wright, who lost both his games, leaving the Motorpoint Arena with no points after a second defeat to Gary Anderson.
Then reigning champion Michael van Gerwen also maintained his position at the top of the table with a 7-5 win over Robert Thornton, who missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish during the game. Later, six-time Premier League Darts champion, Phil Taylor, moved into the top four for the first time of the season as he picked up a 7-4 win over fellow Potter Adrian Lewis.
