Winners of four straight, the red-hot Philadelphia Phillies (41-18, 24-8 home) look to complete a three-game sweep of the St Louis Cardinals (27-29, 14-17 away) on Sunday Night Baseball and stay atop the MLB standings in the process. Currently half a game up on the New York Yankees for the best record in baseball, the Phillies send Taijuan Walker to the mound tonight against Lance Lynn for the Cardinals.

Though Walker has been by far the weakest starter in the Philadelphia rotation, the Phillies are still not-insignificant favorites in the odds for Sunday Night Baseball.

The Phillies are listed at -140 to complete the sweep and stretch their win streak to five, which equates to a 58.33% implied win probability. The Cardinals come back as +120 underdogs in Sunday’s MLB odds. The run total has been set at 9.5 with the over slightly favored (-115o/-105u). The Phillies are 27-28-4 over/under this year while the Cardinals have skewed more heavily to the under at 24-29-3 O/U.

Lance Lynn vs Taijuan Walker

The starting pitcher matchup on Sunday favors the Cardinals on paper. Lynn has been St Louis’ second-best starter this season after ace Sonny Gray, with a solid 3.45 ERA. Though his peripherals suggest he’s been a bit  lucky; Lynn has an inflated 1.34 WHIP and 4.13 xERA along with a 4.25 FIP. Lynn’s K/9 rate of 8.32 is his lowest mark since 2017.

Lynn’s two most-recent starts were two of his best of the season. He combined to go 12.0 innings while surrendering just one run on seven hits and three walks with ten strikeouts.

Lynn has a fairly length history against the hitters in the Philly lineup. In 108 total at-bats, Phillies hitters are slashing just .222/.317/.315 against Lynn with three homer runs, nine RBI, 35 strikeouts, and 15 walks. Two of the home runs came off the bat of Kyle Schwarber while Bryce Harper has the third.

Walker’s history against the Phillies lineup is less encouraging. Seven Philly hitters have faced him before in 66 total at-bats; cumulatively, they have a slash-line of .273/.360/.439 with one home run, eight doubles, and 13 RBI. Paul Goldschmidt has the lone home run along with three of the doubles.

Walker was hit hard in his last outing against the Giants. While he lasted a full six innings, he gave up five runs on nine hits and two walks with just four strikeouts in an 8-4 loss. That was just the latest high-scoring game in a Walker start. In the 6’4 righty’s six starts this season, Phillies games have averaged 12.0 runs per game.

Cardinals vs Phillies Prediction

This has the look and feel of a high-scoring affair. The Phillies are nearly impossible to shut down at home (going 24-8 straight-up at the hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park) and Walker has been woefully ineffective most of the season.

I expect runs early and often on SNB and more success for Goldschmidt against Walker.
